Deep and Infrequent Beats Little and Often
Frequent shallow watering trains roots to stay near the surface, where they dry out fast. A longer, deeper soak a few times a week pushes roots down, making plants far more resilient in heat.
The simplest upgrade most gardens can make is watering less often but for longer, ideally early in the morning before the sun climbs.
Know Your Soil and Season
Sandy soil drains quickly and needs more frequent water; clay holds moisture longer. In spring and fall, plants need far less than at the height of summer, so adjust as the season shifts.
Signs You Are Getting It Wrong
Yellowing leaves and constantly damp soil point to overwatering, while afternoon wilting and dry, cracked ground signal too little. Check the soil a few inches down before you reach for the hose.
